Modern slavery refers to situations where individuals are exploited and cannot refuse or leave due to threats, violence, coercion, deception, or abuse of power.

Why now
Modern slavery – including forced labour and human trafficking – continues to grow unchecked in the region around Australia.
As human trafficking and modern slavery continue to rise across the Asia-Pacific, the resources to fight them are shrinking. The withdrawal of USAID dealt a serious blow to counter-trafficking efforts and has left the door open to an escalation in exploitation. Australia must do more.
Meeting this growing crisis demands a new, integrated approach bringing together civil society, government, business, and international survivor leaders.
